Artist’s Statement
I should have know I would grow up to be an artist when, at the age of five, I would come home from a long day of kindergarten and reach for crayons to illustrate my day’s achievements. I learned then, sitting on the high stool by the kitchen counter as my mother made dinner in our little house in the New Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia, that there are times when worlds just fall short. There were things I could do, stories I could tell, and ideas I could convey with my simple little drawings that I could not do with words.
As a student at Oberlin College, just outside of Cleveland, Ohio, my passing interest in watching movies grew into an active passion for creating them. This was thanks in large part to a professor who suggested that I take a semester to study abroad at a small film school in Prague. There, surrounded by avid student filmmakers from around the world, I was consumed with the certainty that this was the right thing for me to be doing, and I’ve stuck with it ever since.
I connect with my audience through the lens of nostalgia. I am inspired as much by children’s cartoons as I am by classic film genius-artists like Jean-Pierre Melville. In my own work, I evoke the playful whimsy of the former while applying the gentle technical touch of the later to create films that are visually engaging and entertaining. I have a dark sense of humor that exhibits itself in my projects through the juxtaposition of serious dramatic tones and the ridiculous situations in which I place them.
I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in film at San Diego State University to master this craft. Here you will find a collection of the works that mark my progress in the right direction. Click around, explore, and enjoy.
